Administration as Activism
Barrett, Kimberly.
Black Issues in Higher Education
, 82, 2004-04-01.
[I]t may seem odd, even antithetical, to view administration as activism. However, upon closer examination of how effective leaders approach their work, the relationship between effective management--particularly in higher education--and acting in pursuit of a goal larger than oneself becomes clear. The author shares a personal account in choosing to be a career administrator.--from ERIC abstract

, 77-86, Spring 2000.
Discusses the employment conditions and levels of satisfaction of the increasing numbers of full- and part-time college faculty members ineligible for tenure. Recommends extension of academic freedom, a reasonable amount of job security for all faculty, inclusion of tenure-ineligible faculty members in governance, and basing faculty rewards and recognition on productivity rather than tenure status. Overworked Faculty: Job Stresses and Family Demands
Jacobs, Jerry A., Winslow, Sarah E.
Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science
, 104-29, 2004-11-01.
The authors find evidence that many professors are dissatisfied with their workload. Moreover, dissatisfaction increases among those working the longest hours. The data also indicate that very long hours on the job greatly contribute to research productivity. The very long hours demanded by faculty jobs thus pose a dilemma for parents who want to spend time with their children & their families. The authors conclude by suggesting that the challenge is to create a set of expectations for academic employment that are compatible with responsible parenting in dual-career couples.--from Sociological Abstracts abstract
